International Land speed record for blind driver!
The first blind driver in the world to break the 200 mph land speed barrier to set world record!
Congratulations also to Ray Wakefield, committee member at Lake Farm Centre, who was the navigator for Hein Wagner, the blind driver, of the Mercedes AMG 65 SL Black Series sports car( twin turbocharged car with 500 kW (670 bhp) V 12 cilinder 6 L engine).
They achieved 322,5 km/h on the airstrip at Upington on Tuesday 6-10-2009 at 7h10.
At first light on the morning of Tuesday 6th October, Hein Wagner, a Blind-from-birth Capetonian, drove into the record books when he set a new World Land Speed Record for a Blind Driver at 322.50 kph (200.393 mph) on the 5.5 km long runway at Upington International Airport in the Northern Cape Province.
Alongside him sat his sighted navigator, member of our Lake Farm Centre committee, Ray Wakefield, who’s son Philip is a resident at Lake Farm. Ray is a former racing motorcyclist, and a World Record contender in his own right.
Wagner was also first to break the 150 mph barrier when he clocked 242.21kph (150.5 mph) over a flying kilometre in a 4.5 litre Maserati in Mafikeng in September 2005, also navigated by Ray.
Please visit again to read the full story and story behind the story on our page News & Stories or go to Wakefield's website where he will have more information by end of October: www.speedrecordsa.co.za
Organic Farming and Sustainable Energy - BBC Movies
Please contact us if you are interested in movies that explains why we all should start with activities that protect the environment, water, soil and use alternative energy resources. If you need more information, please contact Pierre-Louis at 076190 6384 or our LFC office at 041-3791555 or 0713650221 after –hours.
Pierre-Louis from the Renewable Energy Centre will present this special opportunity not to be missed.
Our friends or stakeholders involved with Lake Farm Centre could benefit from this exciting and informative event.
We saw nr.1 of the series, but, ironically, had a power cut and could not continue with nr.2.
Now we have a better understanding of why we should continue and improve on our current attempts such as our organic veggie garden, recycling water and waste and sewerage, solar geysers and alternative energy, nature conservation, earth worm farming(started recently), etc.
If you need more information, please contact Pierre-Louis at 076190 6384 or our LFC office at 041-3791555 or 0713650221 after –hours.

Xcross Terrain Challenge 2006:-
On the 3rd December 2006 we held the first Lake Farm Xcross Terrain
Challenge comprising of a short and long distance off-road triathlon which
was held at Lake De La Vie, Lake Farm, P.E, an exclusive wedding and
conference venue set on the shores of a beautiful Lake in the heart of an
immensely scenic game reserve. We concurrently held a trail run through
the game reserve for those who do not swim or have mountain bikes. Later
in the afternoon was held a 5km and 10km canoe race on the lake.
The venue was alive and buzzing with Dj Marcelle providing vibes, Tiger
brands a Jumping castle for the kids, and Simba the Lion that came along
and did face-painting with the kids, a bonus for the moms who were
wondering how to entertain their kids. There were 140 triathlon entrants,
60 trail run entrants and 20 canoe entrants...also an energized crowd of
family and friends of participants that came along to support.
There was a beer and foods tent to quench the thirst and fill the tummy as
well as plenty of gazebos and shade under the trees which provided a much
needed cool and comfortable environment for supporters.
A great day was had by all and many months later still had people on their
morning cycles and evening runs talking about the Xcross Terrain
Challenge.
Feedback that I received from those who did it was that we must definitely
make it an annual event where all funds raised are donated to the Lake
Farm Centre for handicapped people, which currently is the home of around
90 multi-racial people with handicaps, 30 of which are so called
"orphaned" where they have been deserted by the families, the cost per
orphan is around R 3000 a month, and the Centre tries to make do with
donations from companies and other fund-raising events. They get limited support from the government and Bennie Stadler from the
Centre was very appreciative of the R5500 we gave him last year. The
amount was quite small as we put the event together on a shoe-string
budget where only half our costs were sponsored and the rest we had to
cover with the entry money takings. We obviously hope to grow this amount
this year in a big way and trust that word of mouth will be our best
advertisement, besides the 1m x 2m advertising banner we will be rotating
around the three P.E Virgin Active Gyms in the next 2 months, as well as
advertising on the EP Triathlon/Cycling and Running Club web sites and
forwarding to their members on their e-mail addresses as was done last
year.
The event last year was the first of its kind for the Nelson Mandela Bay
area and was held entirely in the spirit of having fun where participants
were encouraged to take their time, enjoy the day and take time out to
appreciate the stunning views and scenery that they would not under normal
circumstances have the opportunity to encounter.
Local Ironman champ Raynard Tissink who won the longer event was
interviewed afterwards by our professional DVD maker and could not stop
commenting on how much fun he had saying that it is far more exciting than
your normal road triathlons which for him are becoming boring, he loved
the mountain bike route where he came across Giraffe running next to him,
zebra and 11 other buck species.
There was no prize money , but the quality and quantity of lucky draw
prizes, as well as the unbelievable array of goodies present in the goodie
bags had people going away feeling that not only did they have a great fun
day, but also got more than they were expecting in goodies and prizes. The
Main prizes last year included a Raleigh mountain bike sponsored by
Raleigh, an Orca wetsuit sponsored by Coimbra Cycles, as well as a more
than expected array of prizes by the P.E Cycle Shops viz. Action Cycles,
Cyclo Pro, Wayne Pheiffer Cycles, Coimbra Cycles and our Ironman Shop,
Triangle Sports, Skechers footwear and Nike products, Cadbury basket
hampers, free week-ends at guesthouses were others in the wide spectrum
that made up the lucky draw complement.
Anyone is free to contact me if they have any queries.
Yours in sport and fun for charity.
Many thanks
