    • History

Lake Farm Centre has been involved in the care and training of the intellectually disabled since 1959.  The Centre was started as a “school” for mentally disabled children with boarding facilities.  In 1979 Lake Farm Centre Adult Care was founded as a residential facility with protective workshops.  Here involvement in work-skills i.e. farming, bakery, hydroponics, pottery, spinning and weaving, home industries, gardening and building maintenance, is encouraged.

We will be celebrating our 50th birthday in 2010.

    More about us

Set in the rural Kragga Kamma area, 15 km from Port Elizabeth , Lake Farm Centre offers a tranquil and picturesque environment that provides a permanent home for 90 mentally challenged adults. Living and working together in harmonious co-operation, where the more able help the weak, every resident is a valued member of the group, enriching our community with their capacity for tolerance, support and love.Unfortunately, by worldly standards, these priceless qualities do not translate into money.

Our Residents range in age from the early twenties to over sixty, and several who are now in their fifties have been part of this extended family since their early childhood. While some still have families who are able to contribute financially to their support, a growing number are orphaned and so become entirely dependent on the Centre and on Government subsidies.
This subsidisation is far from sufficient for our needs, and the shortage of money places an enormous strain on the organisation and its resources. Furthermore, in order to permit us to accommodate indigent or economically disadvantaged applicants, we urgently require substantial sponsorship.

Both for its therapeutic value as well as to create much needed income, training is given in a number of crafts and occupations. These include Leatherwork, Spinning and Weaving, Farming, hydroponic Vegetable Growing, Pottery, and Home Industries which includes Baking.

Fresh farm produce and many of the articles made by our residents in our workshops are on sale in our Craft Shop which, together with our Coffee Shop is open each Saturday and Sunday morning between the hours of 10a.m. and 12:30 p.m. These wares are of high quality, and our residents are proud of the contribution that they make to the running of the Centre in this manner. However, despite our combined best efforts, the Centre is not self-supporting and, in order to maintain our standards and services, we are faced with the ongoing and increasingly difficult task of raising sufficient income. To this end we engage the assistance of the public in fundraising events throughout the year such as the annual Fun Run, Golf days, Street collections, etc. We are always most grateful for the support that we receive from our Sponsors for these types of event.

Lake Farm Centre is a registered non-profit organisation.
