How can you support  Lake Farm Centre?

Last update: 17-5-2010

Lake Farm Centre operates without a full-time fundraiser or PRO to inform and appeal to public regarding our resources and needs. We rely entirely on loyal support of our volunteers and sponsors to maintain the quality care we offer our disabled residents.

A.  Charity Run Sponsorship Opportunity

NPO Registration No. 003-544)

LAKE FARM CHARITY RUN – 9 April 2011

Founded by BayFM, Bukani Print & adidas

It is with great pleasure that Lake Farm Centre offer your company this unique and rewarding opportunity of being involved in one of the most recognized fund raising events in the Eastern Cape – the Lake Farm Charity Run.

It is the ultimate goal to raise much-needed funds for Lake Farm Centre, a residential centre for mentally handicapped adults.  We also intend for the sponsors and participants of this event to enjoy a safe, fun and meaningful family experience.

Funds raised through this year’s Lake Farm Charity run will be used to install a Solar System to help save electricity and reduce monthly running costs. A further incentive for Lake Farm to go the Solar route is the indication from government that it will subsidize a solar-powered geyser systems.  Any contribution to this end would be greatly appreciated.

How would your company benefit by getting involved in this event:

 ·         A one page advertisement (R1500 for example gives you one page in the brochure) in a commemorative book will be printed after the event containing Lake Farm Centre information, results and event information.  The results brochure will be available from all the leading sports stores.

 ·         A Lake Farm certificate to be designed and presented to these sponsors to thank them for their generous contribution presented at the post function.

 ·         Platinum & Founder sponsors will receive mentions on BayFM and other sponsors will receive mention on the Algoa fm website.

Companies or individuals who would like to either sponsor a prize, make a donation, host a watering point or even sponsor a cake for their cake sale will also be most welcome.

Should you require any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact me on 084 502 3300 telefax: (041)366 1090  or (041) 379 1684

B.  Donations to help our Workshops

Your donations would help us to save on costs to run the workshops.  The workshops make a tremendous difference in our resident’s emotional well-being and self-image.

The following examples of donations will help us to provide occupational activities that develop and protect the dignity of our residents.

Our arts and crafts workshops where our residents work every day would welcome donations including the following: -
Clay (new or re-cycled clay) for our Pottery, beads, wool, carton, glue or clear Bostik, marking pens, envelopes, koukies, stamp pads or any material suitable for arts and crafts.

Our Woodwork workshop does maintenance of furniture and fabrication of products including bedside lamps, coffee tables and trays.  Donations of wood paints, sand paper and tools are very welcome.

Our Bakery and Coffee Shop would welcome the following donations including the following: -
Sugar, butter, coffee and tea.  To compliment our Coffee Shop we would really welcome a Jungle Gym or other play apparatus for children visiting our shop with their parents.

Our Tuckshop hand out treats to our residents every weekend and would welcome donations including the following: -
Dried fruit sticks, fruit juice, diabetic sweets, nuts, chips and fruit.

Veggie Garden
We try to develop our vegetable garden to help us become more self-sustainable.  In the near future we will be constructing shade cloth tunnels and thus would need irrigation and building material, tar poles and wire.  This will make a tremendous improvement in the management of natural elements, weeds and

Farm
The ongoing maintenance of the farm includes replacement of barbed wire fencing and gates including security fencing, security gates and security lights.

Garden
Any garden tools and equipment would be welcome.  We have a small flower garden and would like to develop this area.

Thank you for your support.

C.  Challenges and Needs

We need the support of our sponsors, friends and the community to meet the following challenges: -

Sponsorships for Orphans:
It costs Lake Farm ±R 3 300 per month per resident to balance its books and the shortfall has to be made up from fundraising. We need sponsorships of R 500 (R650 for residents in Care Unit) per month per resident to continue our services. Please contact the principal should you need more detail in this regard.

Maintenance
Due to the unsuccessful Lotto application and subsequent delays the following backlog exists: -
Resident’s Units 1-3 and adjacent buildings - general maintenance to exterior of buildings: ±R 120 000. New gutters: R 25 000
7 Staff Cottages - general maintenance to exterior of buildings:  ± R 25 000
Labourer quarters, garages and Laundry: general maintenance to exterior of buildings:  ± R 15 000. New gutters: R 15 000
Resident’s Units 4 to 6 and adjacent buildings: interior and exterior maintenance required.

Frail Care Plan:
Our residents are getting older with 50% above the age of 47 years. We have to meet this challenge that include changing our bathrooms into paraplegic showers (±R 4500 per shower).Units 1 to 3 need wheel chair ramps (±R 9 000 per ramp) to improve accessibility and to reduce the risk to our residents. All our passages need handrails to assist our frail residents with mobility problems.  In future we will have to employ more staff to meet this challenge and experience difficulty to recruit suitable nursing staff.

D.  Income generating projects:-

Cattle Farm:
The farm requires continuous repairs and maintenance with regards to fencing, gates, removing poisonous plants, improvement of grazing land with manure and medication for the cattle.

Vegetable garden:
Our vegetable garden and tunnel strive to secure additional income and a therapeutic activity for some of our residents. Thus our residents need boots, overalls and tools to accomplish this important task.

Coffee and Craft Shop:
Coffee Shop: is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10pm to 12.30pm for fresh coffee and cake.
Craft Shop: we sell all our dairy products, arts, crafts and vegetables (just nature - farm manure and compost only) in our shop.

E.  How can Volunteers help?

The following are some of the numerous opportunities for willing volunteers:-
·         Asking your relatives or friends to give an hour or two a month to assist with maintenance of furniture, tiling, silicon work and fundraising events.
·         Putting us into contact with possible sponsors. Some of our residents are indigent and need regular financial sponsorship for clothes and other personal needs.
·         Students and youth groups could arrange work parties to do maintenance on the farm like removing poisonous plants..
·         Some of our residents have physical disabilities, and treatment by a physiotherapist or masseurmasseuse would improve their mobility and general physical well-being.
·         “Spread the word” and help us to build the network of volunteers and sponsors.

E.  What could Sponsors offer?

Sponsoring of the following items would make a crucial difference in the quality of care, safety and security of our residents: -
·          About 30 of our residents are financially dependent on Lake Farm and are unable to pay their monthly levy for their clothes and other personal needs. A sponsor could become the patron of a specific needy resident by giving a monthly or annual sponsorship thus becominng their sole sponsor for clothes. Such patrons would receive periodic newsletters and progress reports.
·         Some residents do not have family or friends to visit and a regular visit would contribute enormously to such resident’s emotional well-beingA sponsor could be a friend to one or two such residents.

F.  Friends-of-Lake-Farm

Once a volunteer or sponsor joins our team of regular supporters, they become a Friend-of- Lake-Farm. This special and respected group of committed and loyal volunteers and regular sponsors plan to meet periodically and will receive special invitations and news updates. Friends-of-Lake Farm play a pivotal part in the long-term success and growth of the services to the residents of Lake Farm Centre.
They held their first successful social event on 12-8-2006.

Please support our projects by helping us, giving your time or motivating your family and friends to support us. Proceeds of the projects will go to Lake Farm.
We thank all volunteers, sponsors and organizers who have committed them to support the residents of Lake Farm.
